From Chris's Heart

May 2011
From Chris' Heart
by Chris Harris

We had a full house as usual this Easter and enjoyed every minute of it. However, it did get off to a bit of a rough start. First of all, just like you all we woke up to rain, lots of rain. We were very thankful, but it did complicate the plan for nine grandchildren and their Easter egg hunt.

Well, Nick had left early for the chapel and I was up and getting things ready for the family to come over for dinner, when all of a sudden the power went out. Yes, there I was in my robe, no makeup, the table half set, making deviled eggs by flashlight and wondering how to warm the brisket. Oh my goodness! My first thought was to panic and totally freak out. And then I thought of last Easter and had to chuckle a little bit. If you remember we had an experience with our chocolate lab, Ginger, last Easter. Nick and I had gone to dinner and while we were away she found the large Easter basket containing at least 40 eggs filled with chocolate. What a mess we came home to.

You know this is the point in life when you just have to make a choice on how to respond. And, we have the option; isn’t that great! My choice was to move on and not let anything steal my joy.

This Easter I was especially blessed by being present at North Church at one of the services where a “Living Last Supper” presentation was given. It was directed by our daughter, Amy Gutteridge. She did a wonderful job. One of the things that made it so special for me was that I was able to help her with the costuming. First Church gave us permission to visit the costume room where we spent some time walking down memory lane. It was a precious time both emotional and fun. I thought about all the wonderful hours spent with Momma picking out the perfect piece of fabric and creating the perfect costume to fit the part needed by the dramas that were done there. Amy and I pictured each little face and talked about who wore this and who wore that. It was a great time and I am very thankful for this experience.

Easter has always been one of my favorite times of year. It is a time of new life and a time for all of us to remember to be thankful for the sacrifice Jesus made for us.
