April 2009 Another Miracle In Tharaka by Nick Harris As we have shared with you recently in the Roar, thanks to a nonprofit organization called Living Water and their Water Project---Kenya, we now have an abundance of fresh water for the people who live in our area. This water is so very crucial right now, because it has not rained in our area since last September. The crops withered in the fields and there is very little to eat. We have been able to minimize the food shortage by making more grain available. This has been made possible by one of my closest friends and one of our most faithful supporters. For each of the past two years, he has given us $18,000 with which to feed the hungry people of northeast Kenya. But water is an entirely different issue. It does not do people any good to have grain if they have no water to drink. This is why the new well has been such a blessing to these impoverished people. Granted, a river flows directly behind our property, but the water is unfit for human consumption filled with bacteria and feces. The people need fresh clean water, and now we have that water. Until a week ago, our problem was this: we did not have a water pump or a generator to help bring the water up to ground level. I had sent Sammy Joshafat, our project director, to Nairobi to check on the prices of water pumps and generators. To my utter dismay, the cheapest thing we could find was almost $10,000 and the machines we really needed were almost $20,000. I called Cal and we discussed what we could do about the situation. It seemed hopeless. We simply did not have the money necessary, so now we had a well, but still no water. In addition, we did not even know exactly what we needed to raise the water to ground level. We did not know the proper size of the pump nor did we know how large the generator had to be to power the pump. As we talked, I suggested to Cal that we call Bruce Whitmere, the director of Living Water to ask him what size pump and generator we required. Since they had drilled the well, they would know. Cal thought that was a great idea and promised to call Bruce immediately. Two days later, Cal called me with some amazing news. When he told Bruce about the situation, he was touched by our needs and concerns. So, he told Cal that Living Water would provide the pump we needed and an adequate generator and he would do this free of charge. This is nothing less than a major miracle thrown into our laps by our great and mighty God and through a great organization known as Living Water.
